THE PERFECT 100: the bestever albums as voted by my friends Iggy and The Stooges Raw Power 1973 100geisterfaust Nov 25 2008 Iggy and The StoogesRaw Power Rated The amazing thing about this album is how swiftly and effectively it rendered every other hard rock album in my collection utterly fucking useless in comparison Hell Z Windstaff At any given moment theres this underlying energy this raw power if you will thats so potent that its all the band can do to keep it from spontaneously combusting into a cacophonous clusterfuck They barely succeed in preventing it from doing exactly that Which is all for the best because really have you ever tried getting pieces of raw power out of your hair Its a bitch 100geisterfaust Nov 25 2008 Iggy and The StoogesRaw Power Rated The amazing thing Along with anger depression and disappointment it’s one of those things that I try to hold back You really can’t talk to anybody about these things except maybe your best friend assuming they don’t have problems as well That being said I’m very glad there’s Let It Be to let me know that I’m not alone First of all the topics cover every thing I know right now I’ve encountered the reckless abandon felt in “I Will Dare” I’ve felt “Unsatisfied” at times with how everything turns out in the end the boredom and pissed mood of “Sixteen Blue” and who could forget that horrible feeling of silent rejection by someone you love that is “Answering Machine”Of course this would all be child’s play if it weren’t for the catchy hooks blistering energy and clever lyrics put together by Paul Westerburg “Androgynous” displays one of the finest melodies ever with just a piano and sandblocks The almost instrumental run of “Seen Your Video” and the energizerbunny’s anthems “Favorite Thing” and “We’re Coming Out” beating out the tunes at full force Even the supposed filler tracks the laughable “Tommy Gets His Tonsils Out” the KISS cover  “Black Diamond” and “Gary’s Got A Boner” no explanation needed add to the bizarre flow of this record Making it awkward and flawed like a teenager hell like every human being 93renbird May 25 2008 The ReplacementsLet It Be Rated The Replacements Let It Be like Blonde On Blonde this record has a flavor all of it’s own  It sounds lighter more musical and if I may there seems to be some theater here as if many of the songs are actually mini movie scripts Lyrically the songs are as tight as you will ever find and the music is top notch leaving nothing to be wished for  Dylan once said in an interview that he never gives one hundred percent to a recording  It’s hard to believe that on Highway 61 Blonde On Blonde or here On Blood On The Tracks he’s not given more then one hundred percent  But then he’d probably just smile and say Well you know that’s how it goes sometimes  Which actually was his answer in the interview Bob has gone through some serious changes and his music sells a certain amount to a certain group of people  He’s had trouble finding the younger audience as say The Rolling Stones have  Many have been put off by several of Bob’s recordings where he has intentionally only put one good song on the album though that was at a time when he was very unsure of himself  But you have to give any man a break who has the ability to walk into a room and get the complete attention of twenty thousand people for ninety minutes that says something for sure  The good thing here is that there’s no filler Bob seems to have found his lost footing and has given us a brilliant piece of work that will have to be reckoned with for years to come I realize this is difficult for many to understand but Bob has a way of finding the core and phrasing it perfectly allowing the listener the privilege of feeling that they have discovered something his music is almost interactive which is what brought this man to the heights he’s achieved  Once you discover Bob Dylan you’ll feel that he’s speaking directly to you and you alone  I can’t tell you what a great and personal feeling that is other than to say that it’s what all great art should be  What I can tell you is that you will be more then pleased with this venture its timeless and could easily slide in between any of his releases  Discover it now or take a second look and enjoy the day with Bob at your side 82streetmouse Apr 29 2007 Bob DylanBlood on the Tracks Rated I’m so sorry that I got myself into Jazz so late in life especially since as a child I had a background with the genre  But like most kids rock hit me big time and I never looked back  Yet fortunately as I explored all of Rock’s branches and avenues some of those branches dovetailed back into jazz and I can not plead with you all enough to give this music a listen Unlike many other artists I’ve discovered to my delight that Miles Davis never seems to rest each adventure is different with each outing he brings something new to the ear each expression satisfies on level unlike the last driving me to hear all that the man has laid down  Here on ‘In A Silent Way’ the music of Miles floats in and out as if existing on an evening summer breeze  There is a tactile warmth to be felt on this listen and for me there is a compass direction something I have never experienced before and that direction is East  Eastward seems strange to me because when this album was recorded in February of 1969 when the eyes and ears of the world were focused west toward California and the Summer of Love This is a very quiet record in many ways perhaps Miles was reacting to all of the amplification and flutter that was going on all around him he dropped all of the up tempo funky numbers and the bounciness felt on his previous multi tracked recordings in favor of two simple elegant atmospheric laden songs  Had there been CD’s at that time I’m sure that he would have produced this release as a single flowing number finding a way to bridge the gap between the tracks  Miles walks a fine line here bordering on the jazz and jam styles of The Grateful Dead and Quicksilver Messenger Service creating a very trippy elusive recording a recording that could only have come out of the 60’s ‘In A Silent Way’ seems to be one of the most overlooked issues from Miles and I don’t understand why as Jimi Hendrix has cited the release several times as being an inspiration to him  This is a brilliantly beautiful album with instruments that quietly appear out of nowhere and then vanish like smoke this is one album that must not be missed on any account I can only thank the powers that be for the restlessness of Miles Davis 38streetmouse Apr 29 2008 Miles DavisIn a Silent Way Rated I’m so sorry that I got myself into Jazz so late in life especially since as a child I had a background 23streetmouse Apr 12 2007 Nick DrakePink Moon Rated This was Nick’s third and final album and his very best in my mind  Many want to call him a folk singer but he’s much more then that he went light years beyond folk   It’s a masterful album with lessons learned from the previous being well applied  His vocals are mixed low and in time with the deeper strummings and finger pickings of his guitar  There are perfect string arrangements evoking a place in which Nick is playing  Nick sings his songs with an exacting measure of grace and elegance yet with a detached feeling as if to say “Well I wrote ‘em here they are but they’re no longer who I am ”  Nick’s songs because of his depression were momentary glimpses of himself that passed as quickly as they came  I have seen him in concert and you could hear a pin drop but Nick was just there doing what he does and when it was over it was over he was anything but the singer or songwriter I had just witnessed Nick asks many questions here many questions of himself and of us as the listener  I don’t think there were any real answers to be glimmered just questions on top of questions arranged by a simple hand and the poetry of a fluid mind “You know that I love you and you know that I don’t care” Each full moon has a name and Aprils full moon is called the Pink Moon  The name Pink Moon can be traced back to North American aboriginal peoples who referred to the full moon in April as a Pink Moon after a type of wildflower that blooms early in the year helping to signify that spring has arrived  The April full moon is also the smallest full moon of the year Heres how the moons apply to Nick Drake Full Moon Names and Their Meanings Full Moon names date back to Native Americans of what is now the northern and eastern United States The tribes kept track of the seasons by giving distinctive names to each recurring full Moon Their names were applied to the entire month in which each occurred There was some variation in the Moon names but in general the same ones were current throughout the Algonquin tribes from New England to Lake Superior European settlers followed that custom and created some of their own names Since the lunar month is only 29 days long on the average the full Moon dates shift from year to year – Full Wolf Moon – January Amid the cold and deep snows of midwinter the wolf packs howled hungrily outside Indian villages Thus the name for January’s full Moon Sometimes it was also referred to as the Old Moon or the Moon After Yule Some called it the Full Snow Moon but most tribes applied that name to the next Moon – Full Snow Moon – February Since the heaviest snow usually falls during this month native tribes of the north and east most often called February’s full Moon the Full Snow Moon Some tribes also referred to this Moon as the Full Hunger Moon since harsh weather conditions in their areas made hunting very difficult His album Pink Moon was release February 25th 1972 – Full Worm Moon – March As the temperature begins to warm and the ground begins to thaw earthworm casts appear heralding the return of the robins The more northern tribes knew this Moon as the Full Crow Moon when the cawing of crows signaled the end of winter or the Full Crust Moon because the snow cover becomes crusted from thawing by day and freezing at night The Full Sap Moon marking the time of tapping maple trees is another variation To the settlers it was also known as the Lenten Moon and was considered to be the last full Moon of winter – Full Pink Moon – April This name came from the herb moss pink or wild ground phlox which is one of the earliest widespread flowers of the spring Other names for this month’s celestial body include the Full Sprouting Grass Moon the Egg Moon and among coastal tribes the Full Fish Moon because this was the time that the shad swam upstream to spawn – Full Flower Moon – May In most areas flowers are abundant everywhere during this time Thus the name of this Moon Other names include the Full Corn Planting Moon or the Milk Moon – Full Strawberry Moon – June This name was universal to every Algonquin tribe However in Europe they called it the Rose Moon Also because the relatively short season for harvesting strawberries comes each year during the month of June so the full Moon that occurs during that month was christened for the strawberry  Nick was born on June 19th 1948 – The Full Buck Moon – July July is normally the month when the new antlers of buck deer push out of their foreheads in coatings of velvety fur It was also often called the Full Thunder Moon for the reason that thunderstorms are most frequent during this time Another name for this month’s Moon was the Full Hay Moon – Full Sturgeon Moon – August The fishing tribes are given credit for the naming of this Moon since sturgeon a large fish of the Great Lakes and other major bodies of water were most readily caught during this month A few tribes knew it as the Full Red Moon because as the Moon rises it appears reddish through any sultry haze It was also called the Green Corn Moon or Grain Moon – Full Corn Moon or Full Harvest Moon – September This full moon’s name is attributed to Native Americans because it marked when corn was supposed to be harvested Most often the September full moon is actually the Harvest Moon which is the full Moon that occurs closest to the autumn equinox In two years out of three the Harvest Moon comes in September but in some years it occurs in October At the peak of harvest farmers can work late into the night by the light of this Moon Usually the full Moon rises an average of 50 minutes later each night but for the few nights around the Harvest Moon the Moon seems to rise at nearly the same time each night just 25 to 30 minutes later across the U S and only 10 to 20 minutes later for much of Canada and Europe Corn pumpkins squash beans and wild rice the chief Indian staples are now ready for gathering The Album Five Leaves Left was released September 1st of 1969 – Full Hunter’s Moon or Full Harvest Moon – October This full Moon is often referred to as the Full Hunter’s Moon Blood Moon or Sanguine Moon Many moons ago Native Americans named this bright moon for obvious reasons The leaves are falling from trees the deer are fattened and it’s time to begin storing up meat for the long winter ahead Because the fields were traditionally reaped in late September or early October hunters could easily see fox and other animals that come out to glean from the fallen grains Probably because of the threat of winter looming close the Hunter’s Moon is generally accorded with special honor historically serving as an important feast day in both Western Europe and among many Native American tribes – Full Beaver Moon – November This was the time to set beaver traps before the swamps froze to ensure a supply of warm winter furs Another interpretation suggests that the name Full Beaver Moon comes from the fact that the beavers are now actively preparing for winter It is sometimes also referred to as the Frosty Moon Nick died on November 25th 1974 His album Bryter Layter was released November 1st of 1970 – The Full Cold Moon or the Full Long Nights Moon – December During this month the winter cold fastens its grip and nights are at their longest and darkest It is also sometimes called the Moon before Yule The term Long Night Moon is a doubly appropriate name because the midwinter night is indeed long and because the Moon is above the horizon for a long time The midwinter full Moon has a high trajectory across the sky because it is opposite a low Sun 23streetmouse Apr 12 2007 Nick DrakePink Moon Rated This was Nick’s third and final album and his very best in my mind  Many want to the Harvest Moon which is the full Moon that occurs closest to the autumn equinox In two years out of three the Harvest Moon comes in September but in some years it occurs in October At the peak of harvest farmers can work late into the night by the light of this Moon Usually the full Moon rises an average of 50 minutes later each night but for the few nights around the Harvest Moon the Moon seems to rise at nearly the same time each night just 25 to 30 minutes later across the U S and only 10 to 20 minutes later for much of Canada and Europe Corn pumpkins squash beans and wild rice the chief Indian staples are now ready for gathering The Album Five Leaves Left was released September 1st of 1969 – Full Hunter’s Moon or Full Harvest Moon – October This full Moon is often referred to as the Full Hunter’s Moon Blood Moon or Sanguine Moon Many moons ago Native Americans named this bright moon for obvious reasons The leaves are falling from trees the deer are fattened and it’s time to begin storing up meat for the long winter ahead Because the fields were traditionally reaped in late September or early October hunters could easily see fox and other animals that come out to glean from the fallen grains Probably because of the threat of winter looming close the Hunter’s Moon is generally accorded with special honor historically serving as an important feast day in both Western Europe and among many Native American tribes – Full Beaver Moon – November This was the time to set beaver traps before the swamps froze to ensure a supply of warm winter furs Another interpretation suggests that the name Full Beaver Moon comes from the fact that the beavers are now actively preparing for winter It is sometimes also referred to as the Frosty Moon Nick died on November 25th 1974 His album Bryter Layter was released November 1st of 1970 – The Full Cold Moon or the Full Long Nights Moon – December During this month the winter cold fastens its grip and nights are at their longest and darkest It is also sometimes called the Moon before Yule The term Long Night Moon is a doubly appropriate name because the midwinter night is indeed long and because the Moon is above the horizon for a long time The midwinter full Moon has a high trajectory across the sky because it is opposite a low Sun Talking Heads Remain in Light 1980 22reggiemt Oct 13 2006 Talking HeadsRemain in
